FIELD STATION is a series of arts-based community events that comprise the Tuscany LRT Station Community Cultural Development* Public Art Project. Both educational and creative, Field Station includes individual and collective opportunities to celebrate the local community and explore the final destination point on the Red Line and its surrounding neighbourhoods.

In August and September 2017, Calgary residents and transit riders are invited to explore the Tuscany, Rocky Ridge, and Royal Oak neighbourhoods through a series of eight excursions led by the GO collaborative / Legge Lewis Legge artist team and local collaborating artists. The artists will lead participants in a range of hands-on activities, such as drawing, printmaking, and collage, at a variety of sites to draw residents and transit riders outside of their typical patterns of travel. Art-making activities will become a vehicle to explore and imagine, while building upon participants’ connection to place.

At the conclusion of the excursion series, the artist team will create a digital compendium to capture and document the community’s process of exploration and creation over the series. The multi-media, digital publication will highlight the events and works produced by the participants through photography, video, text, and sound. Marking the release of the digital compendium, a final event will be held in early November 2017 to celebrate the community and their participation.

*Community Cultural Development (CCD) is a recognized arts-based community-building tool that promotes a sense of place, empowerment, and public participation through arts projects and programming. CCD fosters individuals expressing their own stories, engaging in skill-building, and actively developing their culture through art. Through art, individuals gain respect for their own and others' histories, resources, hopes, and dreams, building a stronger sense of connection to their community as well as ownership and pride over the final work of art.

The Tuscany LRT Station Community Cultural Development Public Art Project was commissioned by the City of Calgary Transit and Public Art Departments, tied to construction of the Tuscany Light Rail Transit Station in Calgary’s northwest quadrant. The goal of the project is to engage transit riders and the three communities surrounding the Tuscany LRT Station in a public art experience, fostering a participatory approach to public art creation and deepening community relationships.

Take part in the Field Station series of arts-based excursions over two stints: August 26 - 28 and September 15 - 19. Each excursion will be a unique arts experience designed for Calgary residents and transit riders to engage in a range of creative mediums and spaces within the Tuscany, Rocky Ridge, and Royal Oak neighbourhoods.

Find specific information at the 'Excursions' link above, including the opportunity to sign-up and join us for an event. Space is limited due to the nature of the creative activities.
